Backyard bliss – The wonder and fun of New Zealand all to ourselves

Backyard bliss – The wonder and fun of New Zealand all to ourselves

Time to have a holiday romance and fall in love again with our country – the special places you know and love and the myriad of new beautiful, exciting and relaxing places to uncover.

There are so many impacts on our lives from the Covid crisis. While it's great to get the good news stories that some businesses in New Zealand are finding ways to overcome and thrive in this environment of global lockdown, it is agonising to see the effects across the country on individual and nationwide industries.

It will be fantastic once we can welcome back visitors through the border to patronise our local eateries, experiences and shops. In the meantime kiwis are being encouraged to ‘do something new New Zealand' and visit their own country.

So we say, let's go! Our couriers know New Zealand maunga (our mountains) to moana (our waters) so here are a few of our suggestions for taking up the call.

'When I was little...' Take family or friends to a place from your youth, travel down nostalgia lane and enjoy having forgotten memories come back to enrich your present and creating new ones to add to the collection. You may even still have an old rellie there you could delight with a hug. This is a time you can renew your relationships with the land and the people, it's hugely restorative.

History is a wonderful theme for a trip. Immerse yourself in the evocative treasure trove of Te Papa, reminisce about family museum trips, check out the culture, and the cafes, in the capital. It's impressive to see how businesses are adapting to offer the local market new experiences. The Marlborough Flyer steam train has extended their heritage rail tours to include one trip the full length of the South Island. All aboard to yesteryear!

This is bucket list territory, Tourism New Zealand has been asking kiwi celebs for their must do experiences but what are yours? Businesses have crafted some innovative ways to put the extreme into our reputation for tourists, so while the tourists are away the kiwis will play!

It isn't hard to find an adventure of international renown wherever you are in the country. Our physical landscape provides thrilling and stunning backdrops to innumerable tramps but don't forget to search for alternatives to the world famous Great Walks. A quick look online will help you uncover the treks less trodden.

Don't know where to start? Be a tourist in your own backyard. With world famous thrills around every corner it's hard to know where to put the pin in the map, but planning is half the fun so let the browsing begin!

What dusty equipment can we unearth from the garage and lend to a friend – sharing is caring! We've all got skis, surfboards, barbies and tents that don't get quite as much wear and tear as they were designed for. And the rental deals are in full swing! It's never been a better time to hire a camper, book a bach or try out some new equipment.

Scored an old ski jacket? Ski fields are open and it's all about the locals – kiwis are excited about the prospect of quieter slopes this year.

The deals are definitely on for camper rentals – with so many hot springs around the country a road trip to a steamy soak in stunning surroundings sounds like a dream.

And if you don't fancy a home on wheels, there are baches and holiday homes in every desirable location you can think of just waiting for you to book in, kick back and borrow a whole lifestyle for a few days!

A trip to the seaside or lake never fails to both calm and excite. The shoreline is our culture, landscape and leisure, gaze at the view or participate in an activity on or off the water. Have you tried:

Blo karts – the only way to get from one end of the beach, and back again…. It's like the America's Cup on land mixed with Formula One, but no emissions!

Whale and dolphin watching – we are lucky to have an abundance of locations around the coast where we can spot majestic mammals in the wild… With fewer visitors you may have more chance of an up-close encounter of a lifetime.

Be a shark for a day – Dive below Lake Wakatipu in a tiny high speed shark submersible, experience the G forces of super acceleration then point upwards and burst through surface into an 18 foot leap! Book into Hydro Attack in Queenstown for an adrenalin session.

Enjoy reacquainting yourself with our unique land, the wonderful people in it and having the chance to support them. It's your Aotearoa, wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness together!
